Grammarly’s Big Glow Up: A Document Interface That’s More Than Just Grammar

Grammarly just hit control-alt-upgrade. The writing tool you once knew for fixing typos and polishing commas is now rolling out a document-based interface. Built on the backbone of Coda, the productivity startup Grammarly acquired last year, this new system is packed with features for students, professionals, and anyone who lives inside their words.

Blocks, Tables, and AI Sidekicks

Forget plain text. The platform now takes a block-first approach. You can add tables, lists, headers, rich text blocks, and even eye-catching alerts. A handy sidebar AI assistant is always ready to summarize, answer questions, and suggest tweaks in real time. Think of it as your personal editor who never needs a coffee break.

A Toolbox Made for Writers

Grammarly’s feature list has grown far beyond grammar checking. The refreshed suite includes:

  • Reader Reactions that give feedback based on a chosen reader persona
  • Grader with feedback tailored to instructor guidelines or course material
  • Citation Finder that quickly generates sources from public material
  • Paraphraser that shifts the tone of your text whenever you need it

The classic proofreader is still here too, now smarter and more polished than ever.

The AI Detection Debate

Here’s the spicy part. Grammarly also introduced AI detection agents that can flag possible AI-generated writing. VP Luke Behnke admits detection is not always perfect, but he claims Grammarly’s tool is the most accurate in the market. The purpose is not to punish students. Instead, the tool gives them a chance to see what may be flagged before they hit submit.

That balance matters. Grammarly wants students to learn how to use AI responsibly while also making sure they are not over-relying on it.

Why the Glow Up Now?

The company is not slowing down anytime soon. After acquiring Superhuman (the well known email client) and raising a cool $1 billion from General Catalyst, Grammarly is clearly in full AI expansion mode. The message is loud and clear. Writing is no longer just about spelling. It is about being prepared for an AI driven workplace.
